Fox makes Brexit jab as debate on Autumn Statement continues

The debate on the Autumn Statement continued on Thursday, with treasury minister James Cartlidge and shadow treasury minister Tulip Siddiq battling on the frontbenches.

On the backbenches, Conservative MP Liam Fox touched on the reports that the UK is seeking to rejig it Brexit deal along ‘Swiss’ lines.

He said: “UK exports to the European Union in July this year reached an all time high of £17.4 billion. So in other words, despite the fact that there are greater barriers to trade on the European Union side than on the UK side. British exports to Europe are actually managing to be more robust than European exports to the United Kingdom.

“So just be very clear, Madam Deputy Speaker, we do not need a new relationship with the European Union, Swiss or otherwise. We do not require freedom of movement, new integration into the European Single Market and new integration of UK of EU law into the UK”.
