Following the death of the , Tony Abbott says he is confident her successor will work to keep UK-Australian relations strong. When asked whether he thinks the UK-Australian relations will remain as strong as they were under the Queen, former Prime Minister Abbott said: “I’m sure it will. I’m absolutely sure they will.”

Former Prime Minister Abbott said: “One of the benefits of Brexit is the ability of Britain to once more flag us in the wider world – in particular on the Commonwealth.

“And I suppose especially on those countries that are such kith and kin. And that’s always been the relationship between Australia and the United Kingdom.

“I don’t think any Briton coming to Australia feels like she or he’s in a foreign country. Certainly, I don’t think any Australians going to Britain feel like they’re in a foreign country.

“Both of us feel remarkably at home in each other’s country.”

Turning to the benefits of Brexit for Australian, the former Australian Prime Minister said: “The kind of irritation that there was once was of having to be in the wrong queue at Heathrow, that’s all gone.

“And particularly with the latest AUKUS agreement and the recent trade deal between Australia and the United Kingdom, I think that the closeness between our two countries will endure forever.” 

Britain and Australia alongside the United States signed a security pact to help Australia build up its nuclear-powered submarines capability amid China’s aggression in the Pacific region.

Under the AUKUS agreement, Britain and the United States will share nuclear-powered submarine technology with Australia.

The three countries agreed to an 18-month consultation period to hammer out the details of the nuclear submarine development effort.

Since the UK left the EU, it can renegotiate and sign its own trade deals. Boris Johnson’s Government signed a free trade agreement with Australia in December 2021.

Charles, 73, succeeds his mother the Queen as King immediately, according to centuries of protocol.

“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world,” he said.

Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-serving monarch, died peacefully on Thursday.
