Emmanuel Macron, the French President, said the monarch “embodied the British nation’s continuity and unity for over 70 years.

“I remember her as a friend of France, a kind-hearted queen who has left a lasting impression on her country and her century.”

Meanwhile, flags were also lowered outside the EU’s headquarters in Brussels, in a show of respect for the monarch who lived through both the UK joining the bloc and leaving it.

EU leaders also paid homage to the Queen, with Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission President, saying her death had left a “sense of loss in the lives of many” across the globe.
