An economically rational government would bite Emmanuel Macron’s hand off. The French president this week, not for the first time, floated the idea of a new “European political community” that would allow countries “which adhere to our values to find a new space for political co-operation, security, co-operation in energy, transport, investment, infrastructure and the movement of people, especially our youth”. This new organisation would be open both to aspiring European Union members, such as Ukraine, and to those who have left the EU. Although he didn’t mention Britain, it is unlikely he was thinking solely of Greenland.
