Blog: Brexit deal on Northern Ireland could be ripped up to ensure power-sharing continues – The Times

Ministers are preparing to take unilateral action and override parts of the controversial Northern Ireland Brexit deal “within weeks”, claiming it is critical to restoring power sharing in the province.

Newly elected members of Northern Ireland’s legislative assembly were due in Stormont tomorrow to begin negotiations on setting up a new joint executive.

But the Democratic Unionist Party, which was beaten into second place by Sinn Fein in Thursday’s poll, has made clear that it will not go back into government while the Northern Ireland protocol remains in place.

Ministers in London say they now see little chance of a negotiated settlement to reform the protocol after Maros Sefcovic, the European Commission vice-president in charge of the talks, ruled out changing the EU’s mandate.
