Sir, I was surprised by James Forsyth’s article “PM has a lever to ease cost of living crisis” (Jan 7) where he says that the UK “could scrap tariffs on all imports bar certain sensitive agricultural goods” to help with the cost of living. Abolishing the 10 per cent tax on imported luxury cars might save the wealthy a few thousand pounds but it is precisely the massive tariffs on beef, lamb, wheat, milk and sugar etc that rig the market against all consumers, and make British food far more expensive than it should be.
