Nobody believes the DUP is going to walk out of Stormont over the Brexit protocol. All it would achieve is an early election in which the party would be crucified, not only for the protocol but for leaving Northern Ireland ungoverned during an epidemic and a hospital waiting list crisis.
So why is Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, the DUP leader, threatening to collapse devolution within weeks? Why is he demanding changes to the protocol that cannot possibly be forthcoming, as they exceed everything that the government has asked from Brussels in July’s “command paper”?
