Blog: Brexit Britain to ‘cement’ science superpower title by LEADING Europe’s new space mission – Daily Express

TRUTHS will be led by the UK Space Agency (UKSA) and delivered by the European Space Agency (ESA). It will see a satellite sent to space to be used as a space-based climate observatory. The probe will work by collecting energy coming into the Earth from the Sun as well as light reflected off Earth’s surface. This will help scientists and governments around the globe to make better climate change predictions and changes to policy.

Almost 20 years in the making, the project has been tipped to mark the start of the UK’s global dominance in climate innovation.

Paul Green, a scientist who helped to work on the technology used in the TRUTHS mission told Express.co.uk: “It cements the UK as having the scientific expertise on climate change.

“Not only is this building on UK expertise, but it also augments it and pushes it forward.”

Mr Green said that the UK satellite that UKSA will send up can help to make all the other satellites above the could potentially be used for the same purpose.

He added: “From an international context, if we own the satellite that provides the data that works as well to understand the UK’s own net zero targets as it does anybody else’s, then we can maintain international leadership on the whole climate issue.”

Nigel Fox, the scientist behind the concept, agrees,

He told Express.co.uk: “It’s a great statement of UK innovation and a flagship of the UK to be a global leader in earth observation data.

“The UK has this vision of delivering to the world trustworthy observation data.”

Mr Fox also said that not only is this a statement of British leadership, but he also said there is potential for it to bring a boost to the British economy.

Mr Fox called it an “epoch changing concept”.

It comes almost a year after Prime Minister Boris Johnson unveiled his Ten Point Plan to become a “science superpower” after Brexit.

Mr Johnson said he wanted to inspire a “green industrial revolution” to reach the legally binding net zero target by 2050.
