Blog: Brexit LIVE: Frost in blunt ultimatum to tear up hated EU deal as frantic Sefcovic panics – Daily Express

This week, Lord Frost called for the hated Northern Ireland protocol to be amended due to the damage it has done to businesses. His threat was supported by Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, leader of the DUP, who pledged to withdraw from the Stormont Assembly if the demands regarding the protocol are not met. Amid the pressure to drop the Northern Ireland protocol, the vice-President of the EU Commission issued a panicked attempt to simmer down Brexit tensions.

Mr Sefcovic is on a visit to Northern Ireland to meet political leaders and businesses.

In response to the DUP’s threat, the EU official said: “I will see Sir Jeffrey this afternoon as I will see also the other political leaders.

“We will have the opportunity to discuss this face to face and my message will be ‘let’s work on the concrete problems’.

“Let’s focus on the issues which are the most important for the people of Northern Ireland, let’s be constructive, let’s dial down the political rhetoric, let’s bring calm and focus on what is our task to accomplish.”

On Monday, the UK extended the grace period for several items moving between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Lord Frost claimed the decision to do so was enforced in order to provide adequate time to hold talks over the protocol.

In response, Mr Sefcovic said: “We are talking over the last few weeks constructively on solving the issues linked with the protocol and I hope that also the way that we handled Monday’s announcement coming from London just proves that we are ready to do our utmost to look for every possible solution within the protocol to resolve the problems.”
