Poots at G7 – ‘My preference is that we do away with the Protocol altogether’
Meanwhile, on the global stage today, Edwin Poots has said he has not seen evidence that the Northern Ireland Protocol can become workable.
“I think the European Union haven’t put forward arguments other than ‘we have signed this Protocol and everybody has to abide by it’,” he said, reports PA.
“The European Union have been incredibly difficult when it has come to these issues, even my officials (in the Stormont Department of Agriculture), whenever they make their arguments with the officials in the European Union, and the officials in the European Union understand and get those arguments, no change happens because the politics won’t allow it to happen.
“That’s not good enough. You can understand there is a problem, you can see there is a problem, but you don’t affect change because it doesn’t suit your politics. That is not a way forward.
“The European Union have not demonstrated good faith when it comes to the Protocol. They have broken the Protocol in so many ways themselves. Where is the smooth transition, where is the move to reduce the number of checks – which is all contained within the Protocol – but none of that is actually being applied, so they are breakers of the Protocol themselves in how they have conducted themselves.”
He added: “My preference is that we do away with the Protocol altogether.”
