Blog: ‘Obsessed’ Rejoiner sparks row by comparing piles of rubbish with Leave voters and Brexit – Express

The comparison was made by Professor AC Grayling, a passionate opponent of Brexit who is campaigning for the UK to re-join the EU. On Tuesday thousands gathered in parks around Britain to celebrate the partial easing of lockdown restrictions and enjoy the warm weather.

However, in some towns revellers did not abide by social distancing guidelines or obey the rule of six.

Horrified Twitter users posted videos on parks around the nation strewn with rubbish following the events.

One, by Sheffield Telegraph editor Ellen Beardmore, shows beer cans and bottles spread across the city’s Endcliffe Park.

In response, Professor Grayling commented: “Something about the connection between this picture and Brexit, on several levels – the people, the consequences, brings one close to despair.”

The tweet received over 1,300 likes and 350 retweets.

However, the remark sparked a fierce backlash from other social media users.

Mark Wallace, chief executive of ConservativeHome, replied: “Weird, because when I saw it, it brought to mind what your Twitter account has done to your reputation.”

Other Twitter users gave Mr Wallace’s post more than 1,000 likes.

Former Brexit Party MEP Martin Daubney added: “Literally the only connection between this picture and Brexit lies in your obsessed mind.”

Other accounts pointed out footage from the park showed mainly young revellers, who are statistically less likely to have backed Brexit.

One remarked: “This rubbish is likely to have been left by the under 30s!

“The very people who complained about having their futures stolen!

“The reality: if this is their standard they haven’t got a future!”

A second added: “To be fair, I doubt it was the Brexit voting pensioners out having BBQs in the park.”

Professor Grayling, master of London’s New College of the Humanities, is a fierce critic of Brexit.

The philosopher is campaigning for Britain to reapply for EU membership and even has “#Rejoin” in his Twitter name.

Ms Beardmore’s 45-second clip shows bottles, bags and portable barbecues lying all over Endcliffe Park.

More than 1.3 million people have viewed the clip with many voicing their disgust.

She tweeted: “This is what beautiful Endcliffe Park looks like today after one day of warm weather.

“Barbecues, clothes, booze bottles and at least one wallet that people didn’t bother to take home.”

On Monday’s England’s coronavirus lockdown was eased with groups of six allowed to meet outside.

The Government hopes to remove all Covid-19 restrictions on socialising by June 21 as a result of its successful vaccination programme.
