Blog: Canada, UK trade talks advance ahead of Brexit deadline – Undercurrent News

Officials in Canada and the United Kingdom are racing to complete negotiations on a new trade deal between the two countries ahead of a Dec. 31 deadline triggered by Brexit, Canada’s National Observer reported.

Without an agreement in place, Canadian seafood sent to the UK could face tariffs as the country will no longer be covered under the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, known as CETA, that was signed with the European Union.

The newspaper quoted a spokesman for Britain’s international trade department who reportedly said the country is committed to “seeking to secure a continuity trade deal with Canada before the end of the (Brexit) transition period, and trade talks are at an advanced stage and progressing well”.
