Blog: We must think carefully before we circumscribe foreign investment after Brexit – The Times

There was quite some muttering and consternation among the business community in 2016 when Theresa May instituted a review of foreign ownership of UK companies and the commensurate implications for national security.

The review went hand in hand with proposed changes to board membership after the EU referendum, leading to exaggerated grumblings that the Conservatives were no longer a pro-business party. It spooked the CBI and others, still smouldering from the bruising trench warfare of the referendum campaign itself.

In the end, it came to nothing much. The prime minister wilted from the blowback. But circumstances have shown she was right to pose the questions on who owns our economy.
