Years ago Boris Johnson introduced me to a wonderful expression. It was 2007 and I was working in his parliamentary office. Johnson had been persuaded by his (rather formidable) press officers that it would be a good idea to make the announcement that he was running for London mayor on the pavement outside City Hall; no podium, chairs or formal invitations. A rabble of hacks duly pounced on him in the manner of lions on a gazelle.
