Blog: Sunak ends silence over the City post-Brexit, but questions remain – The Times

Perhaps the strangest aspect of the government’s approach to Brexit has been its seemingly complete lack of interest in Britain’s most economically important sector.

For years, Boris Johnson was adamant that when push came to shove German carmakers and Italian prosecco makers would demand that their governments agree a deal that gave them frictionless access to the UK market. Yet the prime minister has never shown any sign of allowing his own approach to Brexit to be swayed by the need to secure the City’s access to the European Union market. Mr Johnson is willing to gamble the country’s economic fortunes on a deal for the tiny fishing sector, but until Rishi Sunak, the chancellor, set out plans for the future of Britain’s financial services
