Blog: No.10 is playing chicken with Covid and Brexit as UK death toll passes 50K – Daily Record

As the Covid death toll passes 50,000 and with just weeks to clinch a Brexit trade deal, Boris Johnson’s Downing Street has a pessing to-do list.

Instead, it is spilling blood over who gets to sit on which office chair.

That’s what the unfathomable row that led to the resignation of Daily Mirror chicken turned communications director Lee Cain boils down to.

It is about access to the boss, who gets to bathe in the aura of patronage and who gets to whisper into the ear of power.

Given the incompetent, self-indulgent and chaotic mess this Government has made of communicating any policies, far less delivering them, it is not so much a whisper as a megaphone that’s required.

Johnson made it to the top of the greasy pole with not much idea of what he wanted to achieve when he got there.

Hanging on to his coat tails were a loopy bunch from the right-wing fringe who had managed with Brexit to channel a decade of public anger into a simplistic populist message.

They are not interested in governing or handling Covid or “levelling up”.

They are only interested in themselves and delivering a hard Brexit at the expense of everything from public health to peoples’ jobs.

Model mum-to-be shares powerful image

It’s not the kind of image we normally expect to be shared by top models on social media.

Former Miss Scotland finalist Abbie Draper is used to turning heads on the catwalk but has won attention for a very different reason.

The 30-year-old from Cambuslang shared a picture of the drainage bag she recently had fitted by the NHS.

At 22 weeks pregnant, she has to wear the device as having a kidney stone removed would be too dangerous to her unborn child.

Abbie deserves credit for sharing such a powerful image as a way of raising awareness for those with kidney issues.

It’s a reminder none of us is alone and support is out there if we need it.

Tartan Army calendar will inspire fans overseas

The famous Tartan Army inspired the We Love Kilts calendar.

And former Record photographer Alistair Devine has come up with some stunning images to make it look great.

Hopefully it’ll encourage Scotland’s many fans from overseas to flock back once Covid is under control. Well plaid!
