Brexit was never just about Brexit. The referendum of 2016 mobilised divisions which have been building in the electorate for decades, their emergence driven by demographic shifts reshaping British society: educational expansion and rising ethnic diversity.

The mass internal migration of young people to university is such a familiar ritual we forget how recent it is. Just 15 per cent of voters had a degree when Tony Blair first won office a generation ago. That share has doubled since.

These dramatic changes have political implications. Educational experiences inform political outlooks. Graduates are more liberal in general, particularly on issues of race, immigration and identity. School leavers are more attached to traditional identities, and more threatened by rapid social change.
