As Brexit negotiations foundered last week, Boris Johnson sought to rally the troops. The prime minister emailed Tory Party members under the subject line: “I will not back down.”
If there was no trade deal with the EU by October 15, he said, we would have to accept that the UK would leave the bloc at the end of the year without one. “We’ll then have a trading arrangement with the EU like Australia’s … that would be a good outcome for the UK.”
What Johnson did not say was that Australia trades with the EU under World Trade Organisation (WTO) terms, so the UK would be on a par not just with Australia but the likes of Iran and Mongolia.
Critics say that leaving
