Boris Johnson is currently assailed by multiple challenges, not least the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, culture wars arising from the tragic killing of George Floyd, a broadly hostile media and the blowback from his decision to reconfigure the functions of a bloated and wasteful Department for International Development within the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

It’s as well to remember that very few events matter that much in the long run.

Remember just two weeks ago, we were told by some commentators that the Dominic Cummings imbroglio was bigger than Iraq and Watergate and was a “game-changer”. In a tumultuous and feverish political environment punctuated by “gotcha” moments, it’s often overlooked that the prime minister has always had his generous share both of luck
